Update.

Time is flying by and summer commitments keep me busy. I have a desire to write more, but with so much going on, I sometimes find it hard to find the time. Will I ever find it again? In the past few weeks, B and I have decided to try our hand at becoming meat goat farmers. We have acquired an additional 8 goats in the last few weeks and are busy learning the trade. On top of that, we had our nephew over for a few days, had to hook up electric fence to the horse pasture and I fell off the horse the other day.

Yes, I fell off the horse. After writing my last post, 2 days later, off I went. I guess you could say I had a feeling it was coming. I was actually working her with the person who trained her to try and get her to go past a part of our property that she would give me trouble at every time I rode her. I think in her mind, it was the point where she felt a little too far from "home" and wanted to turn around and go back to her herd. I was trying quite hard to keep her going in the direction I wanted to go, but it didn't quite work. In the process of her turning to go back and attempting to make a break for it, I fell. I didn't get bucked off this time, happily, but slid right out of the saddle. I went chest first into one of our fruit trees...so I bruised a few ribs and my knees. Problem with my little mare is that she is extremely quick. Her movements are so sharp that if you aren't paying attention or ready for it, it is very easy to fall. As I did. This last fall has left me a little scared I must admit. I tried to get back up in the saddle on Saturday, on our very broke horse, but had a bit of a panic attack. Maybe it was the fact I could still feel the pain in my ribs, or maybe it was the fact that he is soooo much taller. I don't know. But I know I just didn't feel comfortable riding. So, I'm taking a bit of a brake. B is going to be doing most of the riding until I feel more confident I guess. I'll get there, but it might take a bit.

We didn't see fireworks on the 4th (I can't remember the last time I saw fireworks...3 years ago?), which was a bit disappointing, but responsibilities called. Instead, B and I spent some quality time together, which is always nice.

Also nice? We are finally starting to get some veggies from our garden. I LOVE eating fresh veggies. Right night we are mostly getting onions and cucumbers, but the tomatoes should be ready soon. The problem we always have is the fact we have WAY too many cucumbers. Any ideas for good recipes? I've actually looked up a cucumber bread, and am going to try pickles again this year (last year, I failed miserably). But, I wonder if anyone has a standby recipe? Let me know, so I can make some good use of these cucumbers besides eating them cut up with ranch dressing!

Tomorrow, B and I are taking some time together to go and see:
I'm really excited and I hope it's good. We both love musical type things and plays. We thought the movie was pretty good (we love the music - the singing may not have been the best, but it was so funny!), so hopefully this will be just as good.

I'll let you know how it is when I post again! :)

I used to raise goats long ago for the milk and as pets not for the meat. I don't think I could do that anyway but I don't care for lamb and I think it's pretty similar. Good for you about the veggies....we've had so much rainy, cold weather these last few weeks that my little veg garden is so far behind I don't know whether it will ever amount to anything this year. I've never made my own pickles but know people who do and it seems like a lot of work. Good luck....

Oh I so hear you on being bucked off, sliding off from being unprepared for a quick move, and just falling period! I have all that happen and takes some time to get back on especially if you still have pain. I think its the body's way of telling you "Um hey, take it easy" so you get the scared feeling. Oh I miss the feel of a saddle though, I used to love to ride English, I felt so much closer to the horse and felt the way they would move so much better. All in all sounds like you have been busy with the goats, family, and togetherness which is always awesome! Congrats on your year too! How fast time flies.

Welcome back! I'm sorry to hear you were thrown...scary! I used to ride in my youth, and was thrown once and had a lot of trouble feeling comfortable again. I eventually got over it, though I never ride anymore anyway!

I've started up a blog about eating locally in New England, and we have a couple of cucumber recipes up. Someone just posted a tzatziki sauce recipe, and I posted a recipe for really easy refrigerator pickles. Maybe one of these recipes will appeal to you! http://localnewengland.blogspot.com/search/label/cucumbers

Have fun at the play!

my favorite is to slice them very thin, soak them in malt vinegar and salt and pepper for a day and then eat them on buttered bread. mmm tea sandwich!

I miss having goats, they are so entertaining:), enjoy them for me. Sorry about the fall, do you think if you took another horse with you, this one might be more trusting to move further away from home? I really don't know much about horses, except I understand the panic attack-and I understand they can feel it and act up on it:(
So glad you and hubby are able to spend some quality time together-so important (and fun:)

You'll love Mama Mia. It's a hoot.

I'm sorry you fell off. I've fallen off a horse (at a full run) and it's not fun.

Wow...from meat goats to Mamma Mia! What an eclectic life you leave. Hope you decide to get back up on that horse and ride. Such a great metaphor...for horseback riding as well as for life.

I hope you LOVED Mamma Mia! I saw it on Broadway, and Loved it! Of course, I love Abba. My kids have seen the movie and they listen to the music and know all the words. I am going to take them to see it when it comes to Houston! I understand the fear, but you just gotta do it!

Thanks for visiting me. I hope you get back up on your horse again soon, I know the feeling all too well. As a kid I rode like a maniac - bareback, in the dark, all over hell's half acre but now I am much more careful and I am lucky that my old horse is such a gentleman. And it's a good thing too since it's a long way down from a 16-3 horse!

Farm girls are Rad. I would know. ;)

Your blog makes me feel nostalgic for my farm upbringing, for goats, for horse back riding, for growing my own garden! Sigh....I miss it all.

Oh my, girlfriend! I'm so glad you're ok - well relatively. I hope you heal quickly. Sounds like you've been super busy this summer. Good luck with the goats. I have no advice for ya there...hehe.

I'm glad you've had a chance to spend time with your hubby. Just remember to take some time to relax too!

Stopping in from SITS. Bucked off? Youch! I was bucked off once and it was from a race horse. That was terrible.

We ALWAYS seem to sign in at SITS at about the same time. It's kinda freaky, lol!!!

How's it going?? Did you like Mama Mia?? Are you fully recovered yet?

Oh gosh! I hope your ribs heal soon and you get back up on that horse!

We have the American Dairy Goat Show (or something like that) this week here in Sacramento. I read somewhere it's the biggest in the country. I noticed you said you had meat goats? Have you ever tried it? Does it taste like chicken?

Hope you have a nice week!

I started wearing a helmet while riding. I never wore one before. I grew up riding wild ponies barefooted and in shorts. There were no helmets. Recently I started wearing one and it makes me feel a lot more confident. I hope you wear one too.
